Jim Barrett earned a BS in Chemistry from Boston College, a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Tennessee, and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara. He was employed until 1982 by the SmithKline and French Corporation (now GlaxoSmithKline), lastly as president of its clinical laboratory division (now Quest Diagnostics). In 1982 he was named president of Bethesda Research Laboratory, Inc., an early biotechnology company. After merging it with the Gibco Division of the Dexter Corporation to form Life Technologies he took the company public in 1986. In 1987 he along with W. French Anderson and with financing from HealthCare Ventures founded Genetic Therapy, Inc. (GTI). He took GTI public in 1991 and subsequently sold the Company to Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis) in 1995. In 1996 he founded Sensors for Medicine and Science where he was also chairman and CEO; he remains chairman. Jim is a director on the boards of Eximias Pharmaceutical Corporation; GlycoMimetics, Inc.; Inhibitex, Inc.; Iomai Corporation; MedImmune, Inc.; Nucleonics, Inc.; Peptimmune; Pharmion, Inc.; Ruxton Pharmaceuticals; and Targacept, Inc.
